Woman dies in Third Mainland Bridge crash, daughter survives

A woman has died in a road crash on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, while her 30-year-old daughter survived the incident, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The crash occurred at the Ilaje axis inward Iyana Oworo and involved two Toyota Sienna vehicles with registration numbers LSR 809 GV and LSR 695 HM.

Preliminary findings suggest that excessive speeding and reckless driving may have led to the head-on collision.

“LASTMA officials quickly secured the scene and initiated traffic control measures to prevent further accidents.”

Officials on routine patrol responded swiftly after receiving a distress call, while operatives of the Nigeria Police Force from the Oworonsoki Division also arrived to document the incident and begin investigations.

The accident claimed the life of one female adult, while her daughter survived the crash.

Emergency responders manage traffic and secure accident scene.

The body of the deceased has been evacuated, while traffic officials remained at the scene to ensure safety and restore normal traffic flow.

Authorities confirmed that one of the drivers involved fled the scene, while the other was apprehended and handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.

“Motorists must avoid reckless driving and adhere strictly to speed limits to prevent avoidable tragedies.”

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reiterated the agency’s commitment to road safety and urged drivers to comply with traffic regulations.

Third Mainland Bridge remains one of Lagos’ busiest transport corridors.

The Third Mainland Bridge, a key link between Lagos Island and the mainland, frequently records traffic disruptions caused by accidents, vehicle breakdowns, and fire incidents.

Recent data shows that Lagos recorded over 1,000 road crashes between January and September 2025, resulting in dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries.

Major corridors like the Third Mainland Bridge and Otedola axis continue to experience high-speed and early-morning collisions, often linked to speeding and poor visibility.

“Even minor incidents on major Lagos roads can trigger widespread gridlock and serious consequences.”
