Fatal Crash Claims University Students
A tragic road accident in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State has claimed the lives of several individuals, including students and a staff member of the University of Calabar.
The victims were returning from an official assignment in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, when the fatal collision occurred late Friday night.
According to a statement released by the university on Saturday, a total of 24 students, most of whom are members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) executive, were involved in the crash.
The institution confirmed the deceased as:
- Solomon Uya – SUG Director of Sports
- Lucky Erim – Chemistry student
- Favour Darlington – Educational Management student
- Anthony Arikpo – Staff member and driver
University Reacts
The university spokesperson, Onen Onen, disclosed that the Vice Chancellor, Francisca Bassey, expressed deep shock and extended condolences to affected families.
She, alongside Deputy Vice-Chancellor Stella Maris-Okey, visited injured students in hospitals to ensure proper medical care.
Police Account of Incident
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed that the accident occurred around 9:25 p.m. at Ikot Okon along the highway.
Police spokesperson Sunday Akata revealed that the crash involved a coaster bus carrying the students and a container truck.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the coaster bus was conveying passengers believed to be students when it collided with a container truck.”
One victim died instantly at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Several others sustained injuries and were rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
The truck driver reportedly fled the scene, and authorities say efforts are ongoing to apprehend him.
Campus Mourning
The Students’ Union Government described the incident as devastating, noting that lives full of promise were suddenly cut short.
As part of mourning measures, all social activities on campus have been suspended for one week.
