Supreme Court Ruling Deepens PDP Crisis as Leadership Uncertainty Grows

Supreme Court invalidates PDP’s Ibadan convention, deepening party crisis and strengthening Wike-backed faction amid leadership uncertainty.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faces renewed internal crisis.

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki has said the party’s organs will determine its next course of action following a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated its Ibadan convention.

The decision has deepened the ongoing leadership crisis within the opposition party, raising fresh concerns about its stability ahead of future elections.

Nigeria’s Supreme Court delivered a split ruling on the PDP crisis.

In a split 3-2 judgment, the Supreme Court upheld earlier decisions nullifying the convention, ruling that it was conducted in defiance of existing court orders.

Justice Stephen Adah, delivering the lead judgment, held that the actions of the faction amounted to contempt of court.

“This effectively leaves the PDP as a party without a defined leadership.”

The ruling strengthens a rival faction aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, which had earlier conducted its own convention and established a parallel leadership structure.

Nyesom Wike’s faction gains strength after court ruling.

Despite the setback, the Turaki-led faction expressed confidence that the party’s constitutional organs would step in to restore order and leadership.

These organs—including the National Executive Committee (NEC), Board of Trustees (BoT), and National Working Committee (NWC)—are responsible for decision-making, dispute resolution, and party administration.

“If not carefully managed, this crisis could affect not just the PDP but Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.”

Analysts warn that prolonged instability within the PDP could weaken opposition politics and reshape Nigeria’s democratic balance.

With no clear leadership currently recognised, the party now faces a critical test of its internal mechanisms and unity.
