PDP Crisis Deepens as Party Organs Move to Decide Leadership After Supreme Court Ruling

The organs of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are set to convene an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to determine the party’s rightful leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections, following Thursday’s Supreme Court judgement invalidating the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC).

The decision followed an emergency stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja, with a communiqué read by Muazu Aliyu, Secretary of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT).

PDP National Executive Committee expected to decide next leadership direction.

According to the communiqué, the party organs—including the Governors Forum, BoT, NEC, National Caucus, National Assembly Caucus, former ministers, and state chairmen—acknowledged that the Supreme Court ruling has effectively left the party without a recognised leadership structure.

“The interpretation of this judgement clearly leaves the party without any recognised leadership… We cannot allow the party to become rudderless.”

The party organs welcomed the assumption of interim leadership by the BoT under its Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, describing the move as necessary to stabilise the party.

They urged the BoT to immediately convene a NEC meeting to take decisive actions, including preparations for candidate selection ahead of the 2027 elections.

The leadership struggle has strengthened the faction aligned with Nyesom Wike.

In a split 3-2 decision, the Supreme Court upheld earlier rulings that nullified the Ibadan convention which produced the Turaki-led faction, citing defiance of court orders.

The judgement strengthens the rival faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, further deepening the party’s internal crisis.

“We urge all our members to remain steadfast… our party will not die. Like the phoenix, we will surely rise again.”

The party’s two serving governors, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, participated in the emergency meeting, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

Party leaders warned that the crisis could weaken Nigeria’s democratic structure if not resolved, stressing the importance of a strong opposition.

They assured members that consultations are ongoing and that a clear action plan for the party’s recovery will soon be announced.

🤔 Question Board

With the PDP currently without a recognised leadership, can the party rebuild in time to remain a strong opposition ahead of 2027?

💡 FixandFeed Insight:

Political parties rarely collapse overnight—but prolonged leadership uncertainty can erode trust quickly. The PDP’s next NEC decision could determine whether it regains relevance or continues to fragment.
