Nigeria’s athletes shine across athletics, wrestling, and football in standout weekend performance.

Nigeria’s athletes delivered a powerful weekend of results across athletics, wrestling, and football, highlighted by record-breaking performances, dominant championship wins, and crucial qualification victories on the international stage.

The biggest highlight came at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone.

Nigeria’s young mixed 4x100m relay team stormed into the final with a historic run.

The quartet of Favour Ashe, Jennifer Chukwuka-Obi, Chidera Ezeakor, and Maria Thompson clocked 40.24 seconds, setting a new African record and securing qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in China.

Canada won gold in a world record 40.07 seconds, followed by Germany (40.15s) and the Netherlands (40.20s), showing the elite level of competition.

“Running a continental record on a global stage shows how far this young team has come in a short time.”

Despite the success, Nigeria missed qualification in four other relay events, partly due to the absence of key athletes such as Rosemary Chukwuma and Blessing Ogundiran.

The team still has a chance in last-chance qualifiers for the men’s 4x100m, men’s 4x400m, and mixed 4x400m events.

“Consistency at this level reflects a system that continues to produce elite wrestlers year after year.”

In the men’s category, Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo defeated Egypt’s Mohamed Mostafa 10–4 to win gold, helping Nigeria finish third overall.

Falconets take control in World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, defeated Malawi 2–0 in the first leg of their final World Cup qualifying round in Ikenne-Remo.

The result gives Nigeria a strong advantage heading into the return leg as they chase another FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualification.
