Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed Defects from PDP to APM Amid Leadership Crisis

Governor Bala Mohammed leaves PDP for APM following Supreme Court ruling, citing instability and need for a viable political platform.

Governor Bala Mohammed announces his defection from PDP.

The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

The governor announced his departure on Saturday after a high-level meeting with political stakeholders in Bauchi State.

“After careful consultations, it has become clear that our efforts to restore stability have not yielded the desired results.”

The meeting was convened to assess the implications of the recent Supreme Court judgement that invalidated parallel conventions within the PDP, further deepening the party’s leadership crisis.

Supreme Court ruling reshaped the PDP leadership structure.

According to Governor Mohammed, the court’s decision effectively stripped rival factions of legitimacy, leaving the party without a clear leadership structure and creating uncertainty about its future direction.

He noted that internal developments following the judgement had made it increasingly difficult to maintain confidence in the party’s stability.

“We cannot allow our people to be left without a credible and effective political platform.”

While expressing appreciation to the PDP for his political journey, the governor said his decision was guided by the need to ensure continuity in governance and political relevance.

Political realignments are intensifying ahead of 2027 elections.

Governor Mohammed described the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) as a stable and legally secure alternative, free from the internal disputes currently affecting the PDP.

He added that the move was strategic, aimed at positioning his administration and political allies for future electoral success.

“The decision signals a broader realignment within Nigeria’s opposition politics.”

The defection is expected to trigger fresh political calculations within Bauchi State and beyond, as parties reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
