APC faces internal pressure over zoning decision in Abia State.
The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reversed its earlier decision to zone its 2027 governorship ticket to Abia Central Senatorial District — just hours after the announcement.
In an initial statement released on Thursday, the party said the zoning arrangement was designed to promote equity, fairness, and balance within its ranks.
“It is just and equitable for Abia Central to produce the next governor on the APC platform.”
The decision was also based on the argument that Abia North currently holds the party chairmanship, while Abia South produced the immediate past governor.
Internal consultations triggered a rapid policy reversal.
However, in a dramatic turnaround on Friday, the party announced that its national leadership had overturned the zoning decision following concerns raised by stakeholders.
According to the party’s spokesperson, all zoning arrangements have now been scrapped, restoring an open contest for all aspirants.
“All aspirants are free to purchase nomination forms and contest without restriction.”
The initial zoning move was widely believed to have been an attempt to sideline certain contenders, particularly those from Abia North.
Among those affected were Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, and Mascot Kalu, both from Bende Local Government Area.
Political heavyweights played key roles in the reversal.
Benjamin Kalu openly opposed the zoning decision and called for its immediate reversal, while reports indicate that former governor Orji Kalu also exerted pressure on the party’s national leadership.
The controversy has revived debate around the unwritten “Abia Charter of Equity,” a long-standing power rotation agreement among the state’s three senatorial districts.
Historically, the arrangement has guided leadership transitions — from Abia North to Central to South — shaping electoral outcomes over the past two decades.
“The zoning debate reflects deeper tensions between equity principles and political ambition.”
With the race now officially open, political alignments within the APC are expected to intensify ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

🤔 Question Board
Should political parties enforce zoning for fairness, or allow open competition regardless of regional balance?
Zoning often promotes balance, but when reversed under pressure, it exposes the underlying struggle between political equity and individual ambition — a recurring theme in Nigerian party politics.
