Two Simple Ways to Extract Pure Coconut Oil at Home

Fresh Coconut Oil

Pure & Natural: Homemade coconut oil is free from preservatives and perfect for both cooking and skincare.

Coconut oil, often referred to as "Liquid Gold," is one of the most versatile oils you can have in your kitchen. Whether you are using it for a healthy meal or as a natural moisturizer for your skin and hair, nothing beats the quality of oil made right in your own home.

Today, I am sharing two proven methods to extract pure coconut oil. The first is the traditional "Heat Method," and the second is a modern "Juicer Method" that preserves the oil's raw nutrients.

Method 1: The Traditional Heat Extraction

This method is perfect for those who want a long-lasting oil with a beautiful, nutty aroma.

The Process:
Start by breaking your coconuts and removing them from the shells. Wash the coconut meat thoroughly to remove any debris. Using the fine side of a grater, grate the coconut carefully into a large tray. Once finished, transfer the grated coconut into a clean sieve cloth (cheesecloth).

Add a little water and squeeze the cloth firmly to extract every drop of coconut milk. Set this milky solution aside in a container and let it sit undisturbed for about 12 to 14 hours.

"Patience is key. After 14 hours, you will notice the water has settled at the bottom, leaving thick oil lumps floating at the top."

Gently scoop these white lumps into a pot, leaving the water behind. Place the pot on low heat. Let it boil gradually; as it fries, it will begin to clear. Watch it closely—do not let it turn too brown or black, as this will ruin the flavor. Once the oil is clear, sieve it one last time to remove any sediment and store it in a clean plastic or glass container.

Method 2: The Modern Press (Cold Method)

If you want "Extra Virgin" quality oil without using heat, this juicer method is the way to go.

Grated Coconut

The Process:
After washing and grating your coconut as described in Method 1, spread the gratings onto a tray and let them sun-dry for about 3 hours. This helps reduce excess moisture.

Next, take the dried gratings and feed them little by little into a cloth, then use a juice-making machine to press them. You will see pure, neat oil dripping out immediately. Repeat this until all the coconut is processed.

Pro-Tip: Don't throw away the leftover squeezed chaff! Store it in an airtight container. Whenever you need fresh coconut milk for a recipe, just add a little water to the chaff, mix, and squeeze. You get the oil and the milk with zero waste!
